Basic Rules for Appearing in Court

  • Show up to court on time. Arrive well before your scheduled appearance time. Not sure what time or date you’re scheduled to appear? Call your attorney or call the court to confirm.

  • Dress appropriately. Pretend as if you’re going to a job interview and you want to make the best possible impression with your appearance. Miniskirts, shorts, tank tops, pajamas, or excessively soiled, damaged or ill-fitting clothing are not allowed. Shoes are required.

  • Remove your hat before entering the courtroom  (except those worn for religious purposes).

  • Stand when the judge enters and exits the courtroom.

  • Silence your cell phone and any other devices before entering the courtroom.

  • Throw away gum, food or drinks before entering the courtroom.

  • Always address the judge as “Your Honor”.

  • Speak clearly when you answer the judge’s questions.

  • Never interrupt the judge.

  • Children may be present in the courtroom; however, if they disturb the proceeding you may be asked to take them out of the courtroom.

  • Weapons are prohibited in the courtroom except for law enforcement on duty.

Be Respectful

The courtroom is a place of order and structure. You should always act in a respectful manner when in the presence of the judge, court staff, attorneys, court security officers, and other persons attending court.

Once the court has made a ruling in your case, continue to be respectful as you exit the courtroom. Attempts to disrupt the court once the judge has made a ruling could result in your being held in contempt (which could include jail time and/or a fine, or both).
